Stack Overflow's ChatGPT plugin tripled signups overnight

Stack Overflow's ChatGPT plugin tripled registrations overnight. The buyer sets up inside ChatGPT, so count your setup steps: they're the pitch now.

Light hero titled “Setup is the pitch.” showing the same signup path twice. Before the plugin it reads where: outside ChatGPT, setup: MCP setup, signups: baseline. With the plugin it reads where: inside ChatGPT, setup: ChatGPT plugin, signups: 3x overnight. Footer: OpenAI story, Oct 16.

A ChatGPT plugin tripled signups overnight

Stack Overflow built a ChatGPT plugin for its new product, Stack Overflow for Agents, and registrations tripled overnight. That's from OpenAI's customer story, published Oct 16. My read: the plugin didn't find new buyers so much as remove the steps between wanting the product and using it.

Alexandra Lato, VP of Product at Stack Overflow, says it in one line: "We built a ChatGPT plugin for Stack Overflow for Agents, and our registrations tripled overnight." The team built the plugin so people could find and set up the product inside ChatGPT, with fewer steps than a traditional Model Context Protocol (MCP) setup. Agent creation moved too, up to 10x by her last check.

It isn't one company's story. Eric Siu, founder of Leveling Up and Single Grain, and Neil Patel, co-founder of Neil Patel Digital, opened the Oct 14 episode of Marketing School on an app that added $500K in ARR in a week by putting itself in ChatGPT plugins. Here's the episode.

02 ⬩ What it changes

The signup is the first thing you see

The last product I ran growth for had a signup path I could recite: land on the site, read pricing, start a trial, then spend an afternoon wiring it up. Most of my work went into the first three steps. The fourth was where people quit.

A plugin moves all four inside ChatGPT. The buyer asks, ChatGPT offers the tool, and setup happens in the conversation. The pages you tuned for a first visit may never load. When the first step happens inside ChatGPT, the signup is the first thing you see the buyer do, so it has to start your follow-up, not close your funnel.

It also changes what a good plugin is. Tibo Sottiaux, Head of ChatGPT and Codex at OpenAI, says on Lenny's Podcast that retention and quality decide which plugins get surfaced, and that it's not an AEO game. Neil Patel gets there from the other side: at scale, plugins help retention more than revenue. A plugin isn't a listing to tune. It's the product, shown early.

It's the next step of your buyer's AI doing the research. The research now ends in a setup, not a visit.

03 ⬩ What to do

Count the steps to the first result

You don't need a plugin this week. You need the count. Open ChatGPT, ask it to set up your product for you, and write down every step a buyer would take before the first useful result. Mark each step that needs a person: a login, an API key, a pasted config. That list is the brief for a plugin. It's also the list of reasons people quit your trial today.

Then read your last two weeks of signups and find the ones with no site visit before them. Those are the buyers a plugin would bring more of, and the ones your follow-up probably treats like strangers.

The setup countChatGPT
  1. 1Ask ChatGPT to set up your product the way a new buyer would.
  2. 2Write down every step until the first useful result.
  3. 3Mark the steps that need a person: a login, an API key, a pasted config.
  4. 4Keep the list as your plugin brief and your trial fix list.
