AI Overviews now top software alternatives searches. Read yours
Semrush found Google's AI Overviews on 88% of the commercial keywords it tracked in August, and on every software alternatives search in its sample, so the page you wrote for buyers now gets summarized before it gets read.

01 ⬩ What shipped
Comparison searches now open on Google's summary
Semrush tracked 400 commercial keywords across banking, software and ecommerce for a year, and in August Google's AI Overviews appeared on 88% of them, up from 45.75% in September 2025. My read: your comparison page is now a source for the answer, not the answer itself.
The study, published Oct 21 in AI Overviews have nearly doubled across five commercial search modifiers, sorts searches by the words buyers add near a decision: alternatives, brand vs. brand, best X for Y, pricing and reviews. Software is where it bites. Of the three groups that reached 100% coverage, two were software: alternatives searches and best X for Y searches. Weighted by search volume, coverage across the whole sample hit 97.08%, and the keywords with no AI Overview held less than 3% of the volume.
Search Engine Land, Oct 22, 2026 notes the study didn't measure clicks or conversions. Fine. The question for a small team isn't traffic this week. It's what the buyer reads before they decide whether to visit at all.
02 ⬩ What it changes
The alternatives page has two readers now
Most small software teams have an alternatives page near the top of their list, and for good reason. Jake Ward (@jakezward) made the case on X on Oct 21, and said one such page earned a SaaS client of his more than $1M over three years. Here's the post.
I agree with him, and the Semrush numbers don't change why. They change who reads the page first. Semrush shows the answer for a brand vs. brand search drawing on the brand's own guide, a third-party site and a YouTube video at once. Google reads all of them, then writes the paragraph the buyer sees.
The alternatives page didn't stop working. It picked up a second reader, and that reader writes the first draft of what the buyer believes about you. The buyer who still clicks through has read that draft already. That visit is worth more than it used to be, and it deserves a faster answer than a form.
03 ⬩ What Google writes about you
Even the citation is Google's paraphrase
The summary now reaches past the answer and into the links under it. Brodie Clark, who posts as @SERPalerts, spotted Google writing its own description of the cited page inside the AI Overview's citation cards, and noticed the words weren't on his page.
Barry Schwartz saw it on some of his own test queries and wrote it up in Search Engine Roundtable, Oct 23, 2026. So the line under your link may be Google's version of your page, picked for the query, not your meta description.
That's fine when the page says the right thing plainly. It's a problem when your pricing changed and the page didn't. Semrush puts it in one line: "Outdated details give the AI Overview room to misrepresent you." I read that as a compliment to whoever kept their pricing page current.
04 ⬩ The move
Read your own category like a buyer
Search your category the way a buyer would, once, this week. Pick the three searches that matter most: your top competitor's name plus "alternatives", your name versus that competitor, and "best" plus your category plus the team you sell to. Run each in a private window and screenshot the AI Overview and its citation cards.
Then read it like the buyer. Does the summary name you? Does it say who you're for in words you'd use? Which pages does it cite, and is one of them yours? If a review site carries the wrong claim, that's the next page to look at. Chris Hart, Civic's CEO, wrote about how a buyer's AI builds the shortlist in Your Buyer's AI Does the Research.
- 1Run three searches in a private window: your competitor plus alternatives, you vs. that competitor, best plus your category.
- 2Screenshot the AI Overview and every citation card under it.
- 3Check the answer: are you named, is your fit right, is your price right, is your page cited.
- 4Fix the line on your page that the summary got wrong or left out.
