ChatGPT's missing referral tag was a bug. The week it was gone is still the lesson.

OpenAI's ChatGPT links dropped their tracking tag after GPT-6 shipped, and the Oct 15 fix doesn't change the lesson: a tag is a courtesy, not a signal. Search Engine Roundtable's Oct 14, 2026 report laid it out. The links stopped carrying utm_source=chatgpt.com and passed no referrer. So analytics filed those visits as direct. Cedric Huesler of Adobe checked about 500 pages where ChatGPT drove 5% or more of visits. ChatGPT fell 31k visits a day. Direct rose 26k a day on the same pages. Then, on Oct 15, he wrote: "Relieved. It was a bug."

Nothing about those buyers changed that week. They read the same pages in the same order. Only the label on the door went missing.

So I'd count on what a visit does, not where it says it came from. That's a signal: something a buyer just did, like coming back to your pricing page. Which pages, how deep, how often it returns. Reading that once a visitor lands: this is the part I do, and it works with or without the tag.
