ChatGPT sent 0.62% of Google's organic sessions but converted at 13.8%. Track one key event first.
Marie Haynes published Google Analytics data from 100 sites on Oct 21 showing ChatGPT sent 0.62% as many sessions as Google organic, and her quieter finding matters more: 45 of those sites tracked no conversions. In Marie Haynes's post, GEO is a distraction, she calls GEO, tuning pages to get cited by AI answers, a distraction. ChatGPT visitors converted at 13.8% on the 55 sites that measured it. Google organic visitors converted at 3.02%. Google organic still drove 27 times more conversions than all LLMs, the AI chat tools, combined. Her summary: "The AI search that is actually sending people to businesses today isn't ChatGPT. It's Google."
Both numbers are true, and neither settles the move for a small B2B team. Volume says keep your Google work. The conversion rate says the AI visitor arrives late, checking what an assistant already told them. That's one person on your pricing page, not a channel. You can act on that person, but only if you've defined what a good visit looks like.
So start where Haynes ended. Pick one key event, like a demo request, and track it this week. Forty-five of her 100 sites hadn't. The source debate can wait until you have numbers.
